Po­lice, fire­men in 8-hr strug­gle to bring down man atop crane

New Delhi: Po­lice and fire bri­gade strug­gled for nearly 8 hours to bring down a men­tally un­sta­ble man from atop a crane at the site of an un­der-con­struc­tion ho­tel. The 25-year-old was in­co­her­ent in his speech and threat­ened to jump to death if any­one tried to come near him.

The drama started at 10pm on Thurs­day and ended only at 6am on Fri­day when a fire of­fi­cial fi­nally man­aged to con­vince him to come down.

The man, later iden­ti­fied as Raju, had come to Delhi from his home­town in Ma­ha­rash­tra two days ago. Po­lice said he also vis­ited Rishikesh and Harid­war be­fore com­ing to Delhi.

On Thurs­day night, Pa­har­ganj po­lice re­ceived a PCR call about Raju climb­ing atop the 25-foot crane from a passerby. The fire bri­gade reached the spot soon af­ter. He was taken for med­i­cal ex­am­i­na­tion and then in­ter­viewed dur­ing which he an­swered ques­tions about him. The po­lice then con­tacted his sis­ter and asked her to come to Delhi. The po­lice said they were wait­ing for the rel­a­tives to ar­rive. Un­til then, Raju would have to stay at a shel­ter home.
