Man falls into ventilation shaft, dies

The Times of India (New Delhi edition) - - TIMES CITY -

New Delhi: A 22-year-old man died on Thursday after falling into the ventilation shaft from the fifth floor of a PG in south Delhi’s Saidulajab.

The victim, Sonu, worked as a domestic help. He was told by the owner of the PG to check the pipe that was connected to the water tank of the building on lane no. 4 as the supply was irregular. Complainant and eyewitness in the case, Jitender Kumar, told the police that Sonu went with him to the terrace to check the tank, and they saw that the pipe was not connected. To reach the tank and reconnect the pipe, Sonu climbed onto a plastic fibre sheet that covered the ventilation shaft. However, the sheet broke and he fell down.

Kumar alerted the owner of the PG. With help from locals, he brought Sonu out of the shaft and took him to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Doctors said the victim had suffered multiple fractures and injuries to his head that led to his death. The police was also informed about the incident, after which a crime team reached the spot for inspection.

Investigating officers said there was no boundary around the ventilation shaft and it only had the thin fibre sheet covering it. A case under IPC section 304A (causing death due to negligence) was registered.

Sonu belonged to Etah district in Uttar Pradesh. His family members have been informed about the incident.

Nishu’s arrest has come as a big development in the gang-rape case as it would help investigators track the other two key accused in the case. However, cops have not revealed that from where he was arrested. According to sources, he was brought to Rewari on Sunday night.

Shrikant Jadhav, ADGP, Haryana Police, told TOI that three teams had carried out multiple raids to nab Nishu, who confessed to have conspired the entire episode. According to cops, when the woman got off at Kanina bus stand, the stop for her coaching centre, around 8.15am on Wednesday, Manish and Pankaj approached her and feigned surprise at meeting her. The two then allegedly offered her some water, which was spiked. As she became disoriented, the accused drove her to Naya Gaon and took her to “a house with a tubewell” where several more men joined them and raped her.

Police said it was Nishu who had called Sanjeev to examine the woman when her health deteriorated while being in captivity. Nishu was Taking

cognisance of the delay in taking action by the police, CM Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday met Haryana DGP BS Sandhu to analyse progress in the probe, and transferred Rewari’s SP Rajesh Duggal to Haryana Police Academy’s 3rd battalion in Hisar.

Duggal, who has been held responsible for police not taking prompt action, will be replaced by the SP of the CM’s security, Rahul Sharma, sources said. booked under IPC sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) and 376 D (gang rape). The other two men arrested on Sunday were charged with “co-conspiring” the crime. Both have been booked under section 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Deenadayal (26), according to the SIT, had given the room’s key to the prime accused, and was aware that a woman was being sexually assaulted in his Naya Gaon property. Yet, in- vestigators said, he did not report the matter to the cops. According to locals, the tubewell was used by miscreants in the village for illegal activities.

Sanjeev is from village Lukhi. Nishu had called him on Wednesday, saying that a labourer in the fields had fainted. However, upon reaching there, Sanjeev was made to examine the rape survivor who was unconscious. He told the accused that the woman’s blood pressure and pulse was extremely low, and may even die. After this, the main accused dropped her off at Kanina bus stand. Sanjeev had shared this with his acquaintances in the village but didn’t inform the police. He was arrested on Sunday.

“All three accused will be produced in the court on Monday. The SIT will seek their police remand,” said Bhasin, the SIT head. The SIT made three arrests in the case within 30 hours after it was constituted, said Bhasin, who hasn’t ruled out the role of more accused in the gang rape.

According to villagers, Nishu has been accused of sexually assaulting around five girls in the past but no complaint was filed against him.
