Zafar’s ‘heir’ apologises for temple destruction
Self-proclaimed descendant of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, Yakub Habeebuddin Tucy, in a letter to Hindu Mahasabha on Sunday, apologised to the Hindu community for “the destruction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya in 1528 by the commander of his ancestors’ army”. Tucy in his letter claimed that it was his ancestor Babar’s commander Mir Baqi who destroyed the Ram temple in Ayodhya in the16th century. “I am the sixth generation descendant of Babar and by that position I apologise from the bottom of my heart to the entire Hindu community and to all Ram devotees for the destruction. I say this in all my consciousness and will stand by the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya by all means possible,” wrote Tucy. diqui, Pappu Bhai, Kayyuam Ahmed, Naushad, Zahid Ahmed and Maksood Ahmed. “No Hindu family lives here but if we let anyone damage their place of worship, they will lose confidence in us. We do not want that to happen which is why we look after the shrine,” said Siddiqui.
TOI had earlier reported how a 59-year-old Hindu mason in Muzaffarnagar’s Nanheda village has been taking care of a 120-year-old mosque there. The village, located around 40km from the district headquarters, does not have a single Muslim family.
