New Delhi: Over 2.72 lakh computers are being made available for free practice tests of JEE (Main) and UGC-NET examinations for those students who do not have computers or smart phones.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Sunday launched 3,404 Test Practice Centres (TPCs) across the 662 districts of the country where one can register and practice the Computer Based Test (CBT) free of cost. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala have over 300 centres each. The NTA also launched a mobile app through which students can practice on their own on their computers or smart phones.

According to NTA officials, the TPCs were set up on students’ demand. A trial run of mock tests was conducted on September 8 and 9 where 2,452 candidates practised at 96 TPCs across the country and the candidates were provided instantaneous assessment and feedback.

On Sunday, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar interacted with 1,993 candidates who came for mock tests from 25 centres across 16 states via Google Hangout where he asked them for their suggestions and said no student would be at a disadvantaged due to lack of resources.

Javadekar told students that they could access IIT PAL (Professor Assisted Learning) video lectures on the Swayam platform while preparing for JEE. To set up TPCs, the NTA has engaged a large number of schools and colleges which have 30 or more internet connected PCs/laptops at one location. Depending on demand, the TPCs function for one shift (2.30 pm-5.30 pm) on Saturdays and two shifts (11 am-2.00 pm, 2.30 pm-5.30 pm) on Sundays. There are 689 TPCs in Kendriya Vidyalayas and 403 in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

The north-eastern states have 163 TPCs and J&K 47. Any student can use the TPC free of charge. For registration, students can register themselves online through the NTA website or using the ‘NTA Student App’ available on Play Store. The mock test is also available for students to study at home or anywhere.
