‘Check NDMC staff quarters for cheats’
New Delhi: A Delhi court has ordered verification of persons living in staff quarters in New Delhi Municipal Council area and sought a detailed report from it.
Additional sessions judge Ajay Goel recently directed a verification drive after he found that an accused in a cheque-bounce case was living illegally in a staff quarter at Vinay Marg.
The court stumbled across this fact when the accused, Ravi Prakash Tiwari, absconded during the pendency of a case against him and efforts were made to trace his whereabouts on the basis of the address available in the court records. Even as ASJ Goel was surprised to find that the quarter, where the accused was living, belonged to someone else, it asked for NDMC’s legal officer to appear and explain why action should not be taken in the case.
In response, NDMC said it had inquired and found that Tiwar’s brother was on its rolls and he had let out the quarter without permission and in an illegal manner. The civic agency also informed the court that after discovering the fraud, it has demoted the official and is taking action in the matter, including verifying the houses allotted to different persons.
