13 dead as bus falls into gorge in J&K

Jammu: At least 13 peo­ple were killed and 13 oth­ers in­jured when the bus they were trav­el­ling in skid­ded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kash­mir’s Poonch dis­trict on Satur­day morn­ing.

The ac­ci­dent took place around 9.15am at Tehsil Mandi when the driver of the bus com­ing from Lo­ran lost con­trol over the ve­hi­cle while ne­go­ti­at­ing a curve, a po­lice of­fi­cer said, ad­ding that the ve­hi­cle was “over­loaded”. Out of the 13 in­jured, six were air­lifted to Jammu.

Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent of Po­lice (SSP) Poonch Ra­jiv Pandey said, “On re­ceiv­ing the in­for­ma­tion, po­lice and civil ad­min­is­tra­tion, along with lo­cals, im­me­di­ately started res­cue op­er­a­tion.”

Poonch deputy com­mis­sioner (DC) Rahul Ya­dav con­firmd the death toll. “The Army pro­vided lo­gis­ti­cal sup­port like cranes to lift the bus as some peo­ple were trapped un­der the de­bris,” he said.
