Dy sarpanch, a for­mer Maoist, shot by Nax­als

Raipur: A for­mer Maoist, who was serv­ing as a deputy sarpanch, was gunned down by a group of Nax­alites at a vil­lage in Narayan­pur dis­trict of Ch­hat­tis­garh’s Bas­tar di­vi­sion on Thurs­day.

Po­lice said 39-year-old Manku Po­tai, the de­ceased, had sur­ren­dered be­fore Narayan­pur po­lice in 2016. Af­ter his sur­ren­der, Po­tai was elected deputy sarpanch.

Piqued by the ris­ing pop­u­lar­ity of Po­tai and his bon­homie with po­lice, the Maoists de­cided to elim­i­nate him. The Maoists were also an­gry be­cause Po­tai had re­fused to at­tend a re­cent meet­ing called by them.
