‘Shop­per’ cops nab pick­pocket who stole phones, wal­lets in Khan Mar­ket

New Delhi: A pick­pocket, who was part of a gang op­er­at­ing in south Delhi’s Khan Mar­ket, was ar­rested on Satur­day night. The ac­cused, Dhanesh­war Me­hto, and his as­so­ci­ates would sur­round their tar­get and steal their mo­bile phones and wal­lets.

Re­cently, the gang had tar­geted former jour­nal­ist M K Raz­dan while he was brows­ing through books at a book­store in Khan Mar­ket. CCTV footage showed Me­hto and his as­so­cia- te stand­ing be­hind him and steal­ing his mo­bile phone.

Fol­low­ing this, DCP

(New Delhi) Mad­hur Verma formed a team who posed as shop­pers to check for sus­pi­cious peo­ple. They caught

Me­hto while he was roam­ing sus­pi­ciously near the stores. A mo­bile phone was re­cov­ered from him.

Ini­tially, Me­hto (20) tried to mis­lead the cops by say­ing that he was an em­ployee of a shop and had lost his way. How­ever, on be­ing in­terro- gated fur­ther he ad­mit­ted to hav­ing stolen phones from sev­eral peo­ple. He said that he would come to Khan Mar­ket from north­west Delhi in the evening with his as­so­ciate Karan, com­mit the thefts and re­turn. They would pick mo­bile phones from the pock­ets of jack­ets and coats of el­derly men out­side book­shops and eater­ies.

“We have taken Me­hto in po­lice cus­tody to nab the other gang mem­bers,” added DCP Verma.
