‘Shopper’ cops nab pickpocket who stole phones, wallets in Khan Market
New Delhi: A pickpocket, who was part of a gang operating in south Delhi’s Khan Market, was arrested on Saturday night. The accused, Dhaneshwar Mehto, and his associates would surround their target and steal their mobile phones and wallets.
Recently, the gang had targeted former journalist M K Razdan while he was browsing through books at a bookstore in Khan Market. CCTV footage showed Mehto and his associa- te standing behind him and stealing his mobile phone.
Following this, DCP
(New Delhi) Madhur Verma formed a team who posed as shoppers to check for suspicious people. They caught
Mehto while he was roaming suspiciously near the stores. A mobile phone was recovered from him.
Initially, Mehto (20) tried to mislead the cops by saying that he was an employee of a shop and had lost his way. However, on being interro- gated further he admitted to having stolen phones from several people. He said that he would come to Khan Market from northwest Delhi in the evening with his associate Karan, commit the thefts and return. They would pick mobile phones from the pockets of jackets and coats of elderly men outside bookshops and eateries.
“We have taken Mehto in police custody to nab the other gang members,” added DCP Verma.
