Ambedkar statue vandalised in TN, video blames Kerala Muslims
past week saw viral social media claims that ranged from the mischievous — a manipulated photograph of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi sharing a meal with Pakistan PM Imran Khan — to the frivolous — a six-yearold video of Tamil cinema star Suriya’s visit to a mosque shared as ‘proof’ of his conversion to Islam — and the dangerous:
Thousands of Facebook users have shared a video in which a youth bludgeons a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar in the middle of a market street. Although a picture of former Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa is visible on the pedestal, the viral post claims the statue was vandalised in Kerala’s Wayanad district — Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency — by people who acknowledge wishes with “insha Allah”.
It was clearly an attempt to stoke communal hatred, as Times Fact Check found the statue was attacked in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district on August 25, following a flare up between dalits and non-dalits over a road accident. The district administration responded promptly to ease tension and replaced the statue a day later.
