Azamgarh: Days after the arrest of a reporter in Mirzapur after he caught a school serving just salt and rotis to children in their midday meals, another reporter has been arrested, this time in Azamgarh, after he took photographs of schoolchildren mopping the floor.

Santosh Jaiswal was arrested on Friday for allegedly obstructing public servants from discharging their duty and extortion, charges similar to those levelled against Pawan Kumar Jaiswal in Mirzapur. On Monday, the Azamgarh district magistrate ordered a probe into Santosh Jaiswal’s arrest.

Local journalists said the charges against Santosh were false and that he had himself called the police to inform them of the illegal practice being carried out at the school. The police, however, took both Santosh and Oodpur Primary School principal Radhey Shyam Yadav to the police station.

Yadav lodged a complaint against Santosh and an FIR was filed against the scribe on Friday and he was arrested, a local journalist said. The principal alleged that Jaiswal often visited the school and misbehaved with teachers and students, asking them to subscribe to the newspaper published by him.

Yadav alleged in the FIR that on the day of the incident, Jaiswal came to the school and ordered some children to mop the floor so that he could take photographs. The principal claimed that when he objected, Santosh fled the premises, leaving his vehicle there. The journalist demanded money from him, the principal said. Local journalists claimed their colleague was arrested as police nursed a grudge against him.

The Azamgarh district magistrate has ordered a probe, a local journalist said.
