Mobs lynch 2 men over child-lift­ing ru­mours in UP

Varanasi/Jhansi: Two men at­tacked by mobs in Varanasi and Jhansi in Ut­tar Pradesh over ‘child-lifter’ ru­mours suc­cumbed on Wed­nes­day.

A mid­dle-aged men­tally chal­lenged man was thrashed by a mob in Badi Bazar in Varanasi on Tues­day on sus­pi­cion of be­ing a child-lifter. Po­lice rushed him to a hospi­tal with se­ri­ous in­juries. The uniden­ti­fied man suc­cumbed dur­ing treatment on Wed­nes­day. Varanasi po­lice launched a crack­down on ru­mour mon­gers and at­tack­ers after the in­ci­dent and ar­rested 18 per­sons and lodged nine FIRs till Thurs­day.

In the other in­ci­dent, a 70year-old man thrashed by a mob in Jhansi on Wed­nes­day suc­cumbed to in­juries. Ramb­harose was tar­geted by lo­cals in Pan­hai vil­lage be­cause he was car­ry­ing an axe. Lo­cals raised an alarm and a mob started thrash­ing him. Po­lice rushed him to a hospi­tal where he suc­cumbed. Po­lice lodged a case against three per­sons on Thurs­day but no one was ar­rested.
