Gane­sha fest turns tragic as four drown in Ya­muna

New Delhi: Four peo­ple, in­clud­ing two women, died af­ter they ven­tured into the Ya­muna to have a bath on Thurs­day night. One of the de­ceased women, Pinki, had her birth­day on Satur­day, and she had gone to the river bank to cel­e­brate it with her friends. Four other teenagers in the group had quickly come out of the wa­ter­body, re­al­is­ing that the river bed was filled with sludge. Apart from Pinki (21), the oth­ers who drowned were iden­ti­fied as Umesh Ya­dav (20), Priyanka (20) and Nikit (21), all res­i­dents of Ni­hal Vi­har.

It was found that the young­sters had joined a group of devo­tees at a Ganesh im­mer­sion pro­ces­sion and reached the Ya­muna bank. Since im­mer­sions are banned in the river, the pro­ces­sion was turned away. How­ever, the young­sters stayed back and ar­gued with the of­fi­cials to al­low them to swim. On be­ing de­nied per­mis­sion, the youths walked a kilometre away and jumped into the river.

DCP (Outer, North) Gau­rav Sharma said that the res­cue ef­forts went on through the night. The au­topsy con­firmed deaths due to drown­ing.

Priyanka’s fam­ily, how­ever, sus­pects a foul play. “She told us that they would be join­ing a lo­cal Ganesh im­mer­sion pro­ces­sion. They had no busi­ness to be in Alipur,” said her mother.
