Ganesha fest turns tragic as four drown in Yamuna
New Delhi: Four people, including two women, died after they ventured into the Yamuna to have a bath on Thursday night. One of the deceased women, Pinki, had her birthday on Saturday, and she had gone to the river bank to celebrate it with her friends. Four other teenagers in the group had quickly come out of the waterbody, realising that the river bed was filled with sludge. Apart from Pinki (21), the others who drowned were identified as Umesh Yadav (20), Priyanka (20) and Nikit (21), all residents of Nihal Vihar.
It was found that the youngsters had joined a group of devotees at a Ganesh immersion procession and reached the Yamuna bank. Since immersions are banned in the river, the procession was turned away. However, the youngsters stayed back and argued with the officials to allow them to swim. On being denied permission, the youths walked a kilometre away and jumped into the river.
DCP (Outer, North) Gaurav Sharma said that the rescue efforts went on through the night. The autopsy confirmed deaths due to drowning.
Priyanka’s family, however, suspects a foul play. “She told us that they would be joining a local Ganesh immersion procession. They had no business to be in Alipur,” said her mother.
