Wait till next year for bird’s eye view of city

New Delhi: The observatory deck on the top of the pylon of the iconic Signature Bridge, which promises to give a bird’s eye view of the city, is unlikely to be opened to the public before the end of this year.

While the four-storeyed observatory deck has been completed, sources said the work to install the lifts and construction of the ticket counter and the ramp to take tourists to the elevators was yet to begin.

Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), the agency carrying out the project, is yet to finalise the agency that will install the thematic lights on the iconic structure to give it a distinct look.

“We are in process of finalising the agency to build the ticket counter, parking lot, public conveniences, cafeteria and a ramp that will connect the parking area with the pylon where the lifts are being installed. It may take about three months to complete,” said an official.

After their visit to Signature Bridge a month ago, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia had said the observatory deck would be completed by September 25 and the viewing gallery atop the 165m pylon would be opened for tourists by the end of September.

Sources said out of the four elevators to be installed inside the pylon, three have already been put in place. Work on the fourth one was still going on. An official said the lift would be made functional by the first week of October. The four-storeyed observatory deck with glass façade would be able to accommodate 60-70 tourists.

Delhi government is likely to finalise the agency to install thematic lights at the SIGNATURE BRIDGE: With the work to install lifts and construction of the ticket counter and the ramp to take tourists to the elevators yet to begin, the observatory deck will take more time to be ready

structure soon. Officials said among the companies that participated in bidding process, five had been shortlisted after technical evaluation to make a presentation of the lighting pattern to a committee of experts formed by the government.

“After the presentations, the financial bids of the companies will be opened. We hope to finalise the bidder and award the work order by the

end of September. We expect the lighting to be operational by the last week of December,” the official said.

The opening of the viewing gallery would be the end of phase-I of the Signature Bridge project. In phase-II, the bridge would be developed as an international tourist destination with biodiversity parks, amphitheatres, markets and riverfronts developed on both banks of the Yamuna.
