Constable suspended for leaking shootout video
New Delhi: The shootout between police and criminals near Akshardham Metro Station on Sunday morning was captured on camera.
In the CCTV footage, the policemen are seen being taken by surprise while intercepting the car of the criminals. It also seems the cops were not prepared to retaliate and chased the car on foot while the criminals sped away.
Meanwhile, a constable was suspended on Monday for leaking the CCTV footage on social media.
The incident occurred in the middle of a busy road where policemen in civvies had laid a trap for the criminals. Around 10.45am, a policeman flagged down a white Hyundai Verna. The criminals rolled down the front window to ask the reason for being stopped. By the time, the police team started gathering behind the vehicle.
When the cop asked for identification, the driver start accelerating. The man sitting next to the driver opened fire. The gunshot sparked a frenzy among the policemen, who started running for cover. Fortunately, the bullet didn’t hit anyone. A few autorickshaws parked on the road had a close miss. A policeman who was taking cover behind a car chased after the criminals on foot towards Gandhi Nagar and even fired a shot at their vehicle, but they managed to escape. Another cop carrying two AK rifles ran to help his colleague, but by then the action was over.
An inquiry was ordered into the incident after locals alleged that the police team didn’t take precautions while intercepting the criminals. It was found that the team didn’t have armed back-up or an interceptor vehicle in place.
Police suspect the criminals to be part of a gang involved in a spate of armed robberies in east Delhi. A team has been formed to scan through other CCTV footage to find out the route taken by the criminals. The car, which is suspected to be stolen, is also being tracked.
