New Delhi: Delhi zoo is now trying to use novel ways to improve the health of Rita (58), who has been unwell for weeks now.

From a new mattress to a TV to entertain her, the enclosure of the chimpanzee has been revamped, which officials said may hopefully improve her condition.

Earlier this year, Rita was recognised as the oldest chimpanzee in the country. She is also the oldest animal in the zoo. Riyaz Khan, Delhi zoo curator, said the animal has been unwell since late July and was shifted to a liquid diet.

“Today, she consumed milk, fresh fruit juices, coconut water and water with supplements,” said Khan.

Officials said veterinary officials from the Lucknow zoo were also called in to inspect the animal on Thursday.

“They suggested a line of treatment and we have already implemented that,” said Khan. Rita was brought to the Delhi zoo in 1964 from Amsterdam zoo.
