Govt sops for cos to boost SC/ST hir­ing?

New Delhi: The labour min­istry may give in­cen­tives to both govern­ment and pri­vate com­pa­nies for re­cruit­ing more SC and ST can­di­dates and it’s be­lieved to have dis­cussed the pro­posal with some in­dus­try bod­ies.

“We keep dis­cussing on var­i­ous pro­pos­als for af­fir­ma­tive ac­tion to give ben­e­fit to work­ers,” Union labour min­is­ter San­tosh Gang­war told re­porters on Thurs­day on the side­lines of a Ficci con­fer­ence. He was re­spond­ing to a ques­tion whether his min­istry is con­sid­er­ing any pro­posal to en­cour­age re­cruit­ment of SC & ST can­di­dates un­der af­fir­ma­tive ac­tion.

The min­is­ter fur­ther added, “We can tell you ex­actly about the con­tours of the pro­posal af­ter seek­ing de­tails about it. We re­ceive many sug­ges­tions dur­ing dis­cus­sions with stakeholde­rs.”

Ac­cord­ing to news agency, PTI, in­dus­try bod­ies have vol­un­tar­ily com­mit­ted to en­sure equal op­por­tu­ni­ties for mem­bers of SC and ST com­mu­ni­ties through ‘af­fir­ma­tive ac­tion’. The con­cept was for­mally adopted by in­dus­try bod­ies like CII and As­socham.

The govern­ment’s

re­tire­ment fund man­ager, EPFO is al­ready col­lect­ing data about SC and ST em­ploy­ees in the pub­lic sec­tor as well as pri­vate sec­tor com­pa­nies. The EPFO, which is un­der labour min­istry, is col­lect­ing the data un­der a study pi­loted by NITI Aayog to as­sess the fi­nan­cial im­pli­ca­tion of var­i­ous in­cen­tives for en­cour­ag­ing re­cruit­ment and giv­ing equal op­por­tu­nity to SC and ST can­di­dates.
