Ahead of visit, Hasina tries hilsa diplomacy
New Delhi: It’s time for Hilsa diplomacy as Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina prepares to visit India next week for bilateral discussions with PM Modi, the first since both leaders returned to office a few months ago.
With an eye on a deal on sharing of Teesta waters for which a nod from the West Bengal government is critical, the Hasina administration has decided to temporarily lift the ban on export of Hilsa and will allow 500 tonnes of the fetishised fish to be exported to Bengal as a one-time exception ahead of Durga Puja.
Hasina is scheduled to visit New Delhi on October 3. CM Mamata Banerjee, however, will not be in the national capital as she never leaves Kolkata during Durga Puja.
