Work starts to breathe fresh life into Naini Lake NORTH DELHI:

New Delhi: North Delhi Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion has ini­ti­ated work on the re­ju­ve­na­tion of Naini Lake — a wa­ter­body lo­cated in the mid­dle of the bustling Model Town area. On Sun­day, min­is­ter of state for health and fam­ily wel­fare Harsh Vard­han vis­ited the site to inspect the work.

To at­tract tourists and lo­cal vis­i­tors alike, Delhi Tourism and Trans­port De­vel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion (DTTDC) would start a boat­ing fa­cil­ity there, prob­a­bly by the next week it­self, an of­fi­cial said. Though there was no plan to con­duct deep de-silt­ing in the lake as of now, the re­ju­ve­na­tion project in­cluded in­tro­duc­ing “float­ing planters” to pu­rify its wa­ter, the of­fi­cial added.

“Na­tional En­vi­ron­men­tal En­gi­neer­ing Re­search In­sti­tute (NEERI) has placed 23 float­ing planters in the lake. Th­ese have a com­bi­na­tion of shrubs and plants to curb pol­lu­tion and in­crease the bi­o­log­i­cal oxy­gen de­mand (BOD) lev­els,” a north cor­po­ra­tion of­fi­cial said.
