Cong to contest more seats than NCP in Maha
Allies Had Earlier Decided To Fight 125 Seats Each
Mumbai: Congress and NCP decided on Sunday that the former will contest more seats than the latter in Maharashtra, a departure from the earlier agreement between the two parties when they had decided that each of them would contest 125 seats and leave the remaining 38 seats for the smaller allies.
In a meeting between the two partners, it was decided that Congress will contest 135138 seats and NCP 122-125 seats, leaving the remaining seats for smaller parties.
State Congress president Balasaheb Thorat said it was proposed at the meeting that his party would contest more seats than NCP. A senior NCP leader confirmed this. “It was proposed that Congress will contest 135-138 seats while NCP 122-125 seats. We will adjust all the smaller parties. There is dispute on three to four seats, it will be resolved amicably,” he added.
The NCP leader said leaders of the alliance, including those from the smaller parties, will meet in Mumbai on October 2 to finalise the joint manifesto. Congress on Sunday released its first list of 51 candidates for the next month’s Maharashtra Assembly elections, fielding former CM Ashok Chavan from the Bhokar constituency and state party chief Vijay alias Balasaheb Thorat from Sangamner. The party has fielded 23 sitting MLAs, out of the 42 seats it had won in the 2014 assembly polls. Ashok Chavan’s wife, Amita Sharma-Chavan, is sitting MLA from Bhokar. Former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s son Amit has been fielded from the Latur City seat, while ex-Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s daughter Praniti will contest from the Solapur City Central.
