Cong to con­test more seats than NCP in Maha

Al­lies Had Ear­lier De­cided To Fight 125 Seats Each

Mum­bai: Con­gress and NCP de­cided on Sun­day that the for­mer will con­test more seats than the lat­ter in Ma­ha­rash­tra, a de­par­ture from the ear­lier agree­ment be­tween the two par­ties when they had de­cided that each of them would con­test 125 seats and leave the re­main­ing 38 seats for the smaller al­lies.

In a meet­ing be­tween the two part­ners, it was de­cided that Con­gress will con­test 135138 seats and NCP 122-125 seats, leav­ing the re­main­ing seats for smaller par­ties.

State Con­gress pres­i­dent Balasa­heb Tho­rat said it was pro­posed at the meet­ing that his party would con­test more seats than NCP. A se­nior NCP leader con­firmed this. “It was pro­posed that Con­gress will con­test 135-138 seats while NCP 122-125 seats. We will ad­just all the smaller par­ties. There is dis­pute on three to four seats, it will be re­solved am­i­ca­bly,” he added.

The NCP leader said lead­ers of the al­liance, in­clud­ing those from the smaller par­ties, will meet in Mum­bai on Oc­to­ber 2 to fi­nalise the joint man­i­festo. Con­gress on Sun­day re­leased its first list of 51 can­di­dates for the next month’s Ma­ha­rash­tra Assem­bly elec­tions, field­ing for­mer CM Ashok Cha­van from the Bhokar con­stituency and state party chief Vi­jay alias Balasa­heb Tho­rat from Sangam­ner. The party has fielded 23 sit­ting MLAs, out of the 42 seats it had won in the 2014 assem­bly polls. Ashok Cha­van’s wife, Amita Sharma-Cha­van, is sit­ting MLA from Bhokar. For­mer chief min­is­ter Vi­las­rao Desh­mukh’s son Amit has been fielded from the Latur City seat, while ex-Union home min­is­ter Sushilku­mar Shinde’s daugh­ter Pran­iti will con­test from the So­la­pur City Cen­tral.
