30 cases in 2 wks: Robbers active in Lutyens’ arrested
New Delhi: Two gun-toting robbers, who had been wreaking havoc in Lutyens’ Delhi, were nabbed near Mandir Marg on Monday night. The criminals were involved in about 30 cases committed in the past two weeks. When they were flagged down for checking, one of the robbers attacked a policeman with a knife and injured him. Police suspect the duo was also involved in robbing a couple near Connaught Place.
The accused, Karnail Singh (49) and Jitender Kumar (36), had earlier committed thefts and robberies in north Delhi. They started targeting people in Lutyens’ Delhi as the empty stretches made it easy for them to escape. As they knew that the area was under CCTV surveillance, they would carry stickers of numbers to paste them over the numberplates of the stolen bikes used in the crimes. In this manner, the bike would have a different numberplate in each robbery committed by them.
DCP (New Delhi) Eish Singhal said that after getting a tip-off about their movement on Monday night, six policemen on three motorbikes were deployed to intercept them near Gole Market. “The robbers tried to speed off, but they were boxed in and forced to enter Baird Lane near Mandir Marg. A police team stopped them by putting across a barricade,” he added.
Finding themselves trapped, Kumar, who was riding pillion, pulled out a knife and tried to stab a policeman. However, he was caught and disarmed. The cops seized a loaded pistol from Singh.
During interrogation, the men confessed to robbing a policeman’s wife, who was on her way to RML Hospital. She was dragged out of the autorickshaw she was travelling in when she did not let go of her bag near Purana Qila Road. A week later, on September 25, the men snatched a woman’s handbag near Red Cross Society, barely a stone’s throw from the main gate of Parliament.
Police said Singh has four cases of attempt to murder, 20 cases of snatching and robbery lodged against him in Gulabi Bagh. A resident of Andha Mughal in north Delhi, he had partnered with Kumar to commit the crimes. The duo would be taken in police custody and produced before each victim so that their role in the crime could be confirmed. Sections of MCOCA might also be invoked against them.
