Encounter with Special Cell: 3 criminals shot at near Meerut
New Delhi: Delhi Police’s Special Cell shot three criminals during an encounter near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday night.
The accused men, hiding in a field, had opened fire at the police team after being surrounded. When the cops retaliated, the criminals tried to flee but suffered gunshot wounds to their limbs.
The incident took place around 9pm when a joint team of Special Cell and Meerut police Crime Branch laid a trap for three criminals — identified as Saddam Gauri, Usman and Deepak. When the team intercepted the men who were travelling in a Chevrolet Beat near Transport Nagar, they opened fire.
In order to escape, the men left the car and started running to a field nearby. They were, however, surrounded by and got into a fire fight with the policemen during which all three suffered injuries.
Police have recovered the weapons used by the men and the Chevrolet Beat car, which they suspect was stolen from the area. The criminals have been admitted to a hospital and are being treated for their injuries. They will be brought back to Delhi after they recover, said a police officer.
According to the police, Gauri is a sharp-shooter with the Neeraj Bawana gang and was the mastermind who executed the sensational escape of gangster Amit Bhoora from police custody in Uttarakhand in 2014.
He has been wanted by Delhi Police ever since. Gauri and his associates kept changing their hideouts to escape the police dragnet.
Gauri had also stolen two AK-47s and an SLR rifle from the cops guarding Bhoora before escaping and has since been using them in gang wars.
