New Delhi: Prime Min­is­ter Naren­dra Modi’s an­nounce­ment of only ru­ral ar­eas declar­ing them­selves open defe­ca­tion free (ODF) on Wed­nes­day may have sur­prised many, but gov­ern­ment data shows why he did not re­fer to the sta­tus of san­i­ta­tion in ur­ban ar­eas at all dur­ing his speech in Ahmed­abad. Till Oc­to­ber 2 (Wed­nes­day), 52 ur­ban lo­cal bod­ies (ULBs) in West Ben­gal had not claimed to hav­ing achieved the ODF tar­get.

On Wed­nes­day, with­out tak­ing name of West Ben­gal, Union ur­ban af­fairs min­is­ter Hardeep Singh Puri had in­di­cated that they may have to wait till De­cem­ber to de­clare the en­tire ur­ban ar­eas free from open defe­ca­tion. He said his min­istry was en­gag­ing with the “only” state
