Bus driver runs over man, dumps him on footpath
New Delhi: A homeless man died near Sarai Rohilla on Thursday morning after a bus driver allegedly ran over him with the vehicle. He pulled him out from under the wheels and then dumped him on the footpath before fleeing. By the time police was informed and the man was rushed to a hospital, he had bled to death.
Police said that the man was sitting on the footpath near Vaishno Mata mandir on Swami Narayan Marg when the incident happened. He was right next to the parked bus when the vehicle started with a jerk, crushing the man.
The driver has been booked for culpable homicide and a manhunt has been launched to nab him.
The accident was witnessed by another homeless man, Rishi Pal, who has registered his statement with police. Pal said that the incident happened around 7am. The bus driver was sleeping inside the vehicle. He woke up, cleaned the bus and then tried to start it. The homeless man had just got up from the footpath and was stepping away when the bus jerked forward and hit him. The man fell and the left front wheel of the bus ran over him.
As onlookers gathered on hearing the man’s cries, the driver pulled out the man and dumped him on the footpath before fleeing with the vehicle.
Pal said that the man lay bleeding on the footpath as onlookers passed by but no one informed the police. Finally, Pal managed to borrow a phone and called the cops. He was taken to Bara Hindu Rao hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police said that the victim is about 50 years old and lived on the same footpath. He begged for alms from visitors at the nearby temple to survive, and is yet to be identified.
Prima facie, the probe suggests that the bus was left in gear. As a result, it could have jerked forward when the driver tried to switch on the ignition. Police are trying to identify the bus driver from the description given by the witnesses. The vehicle is a private bus that might be operating with a travel agency.
