BIS-standard bulletproof vests a big hit
New Delhi: Bullet-resistant jackets manufactured as per the BIS standards, which are 50% lighter and cheaper than those manufactured by others, have become more popular among the security agencies in less than a year after the new norms came into force. These jackets can withstand bullets from AK-47 and more intense assault, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Friday.
“BIS has formulated the national standards for bulletproof jackets which will promote ‘Make in India’. This jacket is of best quality in the world and are more convenient for our jawans. There have been increase in the export of these jackets. Security agencies are now specifying the BIS standards while inviting bids for bulk supply,” Paswan said while showcasing a jacket.
In December 2018, India joined the select league of nations such as the United States, United Kingdom and Germany which have their own national standards. The minister said there is a demand of 3.5 lakh such jackets only in India. The new standards are expected to fulfil the long pending needs of Indian Armed Forces, para military forces and state police forces.
