Raipur: Three cou­ples and their fam­i­lies have been os­tracised by vil­lage el­ders in Ch­hat­tis­garh’s Raigarh be­cause the young­sters mar­ried for love, out­side the com­mu­nity, and re­fused to pay the Rs 3 lakh ‘fine’ slapped on them.

Vil­lagers were warned that any­one who talks to the os­tracised fam­i­lies would be fined Rs 10,000. The fam­i­lies weren’t al­lowed to draw wa­ter from the vil­lage pond. Peo­ple wouldn’t talk to them on the street, gro­cers were afraid to sell any­thing to them, and a man who gave a lift to one of the youths had to cough up Rs 5,000 as fine.

Help­less, the fam­i­lies went to po­lice on Gandhi Jayanti. On Thurs­day, the cops booked seven per­sons,
