Dawood aide held for 5L extortion bid
Mumbai: Crime branch recently arrested an aide of gangster Dawood Ibrahim for trying to extort Rs5 lakhs from a real estate developer. The victim, Ajay Dhawan, has then lodged a complaint with the Juhu police station complaining that the accused, Riyaz Bhati (50), has been threatening him with dire consequences if he does not pay him the ransom. Bhati tried to take advantage of Dhawan’s dispute between him and his partner over a land purchase.
The problem began for Dhawan when rift was formed between him and his business partner which Bhati learnt. “Bhati threatened Dhawan after showing his underworld contacts and demanded money,” said a crime branch officer. Bhati was caught on a tip-off received and was nabbed by the team led by senior inspector Vinayak Mehr (Crime Branch Unit-1) from South Mumbai on October 4. “Bhati is in custody till October 9.
