Da­wood aide held for 5L ex­tor­tion bid

Mum­bai: Crime branch re­cently ar­rested an aide of gang­ster Da­wood Ibrahim for try­ing to ex­tort Rs5 lakhs from a real es­tate devel­oper. The vic­tim, Ajay Dhawan, has then lodged a com­plaint with the Juhu po­lice sta­tion com­plain­ing that the ac­cused, Riyaz Bhati (50), has been threat­en­ing him with dire con­se­quences if he does not pay him the ran­som. Bhati tried to take ad­van­tage of Dhawan’s dis­pute be­tween him and his part­ner over a land pur­chase.

The prob­lem be­gan for Dhawan when rift was formed be­tween him and his busi­ness part­ner which Bhati learnt. “Bhati threat­ened Dhawan af­ter show­ing his un­der­world con­tacts and de­manded money,” said a crime branch of­fi­cer. Bhati was caught on a tip-off re­ceived and was nabbed by the team led by senior in­spec­tor Vi­nayak Mehr (Crime Branch Unit-1) from South Mum­bai on Oc­to­ber 4. “Bhati is in cus­tody till Oc­to­ber 9.
