Agra: Slaughterhouses, food processing units and other industries from where large quantities of effluents are discharged will have to maintain water accounts, according to a recent directive of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). It will also be mandatory for the industrial units to recycle the amount of water they consume instead of discharging on land or in water.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar ordered the industries while hearing a petition filed by Shailesh Singh, a Delhibased environmental activist, against Aligarh’s Al-Dua food processing unit for violation of environmental regulations. The guidelines for “utilisation of treated effluent for irrigation” were formulated by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) last month on the directions of NGT, which will apply throughout the country.

Pollution control boards of all states will ensure strict compliance of these orders while giving environmental permission to such industries, said the order.

In view of increasing groundwater pollution, the NGT has also ordered that intensive monitoring of groundwater quality should be conducted around such industries.
