DU’s Hindi dept headless for 24 days
New Delhi: Delhi University’s Hindi department has had no head for 24 days now as there is a tussle over the appointment. The vice-chancellor’s office is considering the matter. Protesters on Monday took out a ‘Justice March’ in North Campus alleging that DU administration is creating hurdles regarding the appointment of Sheoraj Singh, as he is a dalit.
The protesters demanded the HOD’s position should not be left vacant. They submitted a memorandum to the VC’s office. “We demand the department release the seniority list and based on that, professor Singh should be given the charge of HOD without delay,” said Hansraj Suman of the academicforum for social justice.
He stated that this was the first-ever instance in the history of the university where the department has not had an HOD in the past 24 days. “Singh’s name is on the top of the seniority list, despite that, they are not making him the head. This shows that in higher educational institutions, caste discrimination is still prevalent,” he alleged.
Speaking to TOI,
Singh, said that he has been performing duties as acting HOD and acting dean of the Faculty of Arts, “yet, it has been over three weeks since the previous head finished his term, but the university is delaying my appointment .”
The professor, who goes by the pen name ‘Bechain,’ said, “From the time the HOD finished his term on September12, I have been carrying out duties as the head but have not officially been appointed yet. It is the convention to appoint the seniormost professor of the department as the head. This clearly proves that it is because I am a dalit.”
He had also alleged that there is another professor in the department who has been trying for the HOD’s position. “Professor KN Tiwari has sent a presentation to the administration to become the HOD.” Singh alleged that the professor has been going around telling people that “he will not let a dalit become an HOD.”
Tiwari, however, stated that he never sent any presentation. He also rejected the allegations that he made casteist statements.
