Noida: Police are looking for a 30-year-old Amazon delivery agent who went to a woman’s flat on Monday to pick up returned items and allegedly attempted to rape her after an argument.

The incident could bring under scrutiny the screening mechanism used by societies for delivery agents from all kinds of service providers who frequent flats across Delhi and its suburbs.

The 43-year-old customer, who works in a private firm, said in her complaint that she had purchased a product on Amazon containing five small boxes, and filed a return request for all of them.

The pick-up agent, who gave his name as Bhupendra Pal in the society’s entry register, allegedly hypnotised the woman, after which she had a blackout, her sister said later.

When she came to her senses, she saw the man standing in front of her with his pants lowered, after which she screamed for help, she added. The police complaint too says the woman was hypnotised.

The woman rushed to the washroom and brought out a floor wiper with which she beat up the delivery agent, who then quickly fled the spot, her sister said.

The delivery agent had come to pickup the item around 11.20am on Monday. The woman’s sister told he refused to pick up the entire consignment, claiming that he was supposed to accept only four boxes, not five.

“This led to an argument between the two. My sister spoke to the customer care and complained about the delivery boy. They assured her that her return for all five boxes will be processed again on October 9 (Wednesday),” she said.

Bhupendra, who works as delivery associate with Amazon through a service provider, went downstairs, only to return minutes later. He allegedly told the woman he would pick up the five boxes, her sister said. “As my sister had already spoken to the customer care, she told him that she would not give him the package now,” she said.

That was when the woman became unconscious and was molested, according to the complaint.

The woman’s sister arrived at the flat around 2pm and called the number that Bhupendra had written in the entry register. “When I asked him where he came from, he said that he had come from the Amazon pick-up office in Sector 58 and then disconnected,” she said, adding they had also filed a complaint with Amazon.

SI Pradeep Kumar, the investigating officer in the case, told TOI they had checked the entry register and the man’s details were found to be correct.

Dharmendra Sharma, SHO, Sector 49 police station, said an FIR was lodged against Bhupendra under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life).

Aspokesperson for Amazon said, “Safety is of utmost importance to us and these allegations are troubling. We are taking immediate action with our delivery service provider and police as they investigate.”
