Kolkata: Taking the theme of communal amity beyond platitudes, a Muslim girl was one among five “kumaris” worshipped as living incarnations of the goddess at a Durga Puja in Kolkata’s Salt Lake township during the celebrations that ended on Tuesday.

Five-year-old Alia Parveen’s parents admitted to being taken aback when her teachers sought their permission last week to have her participate in the Kumari Puja rituals on Ashtami as a “living goddess”.

The request had come from Bidhannagar Ramakrishna Vivekananda Kendra in DD Block, which wanted to walk the talk rather than just pay lip service to the idea of an inclusive celebration.
