No Neeraj at National Open Athletics
Ranchi: With the Olympics just 10 months away, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) decided to pull out India’s biggest medal hope in athletics, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, of the 59th National Open Athletic Championships in Ranchi on Thursday.
“After the evening training session we took a collective decision that Neeraj Chopra still needs some more time before he can compete,” said AFI president Adille Sumariwalla.
“It’s natural for him to be excited to return but we can’t afford to lose him for 2020. Though Neeraj’s entry was made for the Open Nationals, his participation was always going to be subject to review. He will continue to train under biomechanical expert Dr Klaus Bartonietz,” he added.
The 21-year-old had undergone surgery to remove bone fragments in his right elbow joint in May this year and has since been in the process of rehabilitation.
Neeraj had last participated at the Services Athletics Championships last September and had secured a throw of 83.9m. Fellow javelin throwers Shivpal Singh and Annu Rani, both of whom failed to put up a good show at World Championships in Doha, are participating at the championship.
