Pope to de­clare Ker­ala nun a saint to­day

Kochi: The Catholic Church in Ker­ala is all set to cel­e­brate the canon­i­sa­tion of its fourth saint, Mother Mariam Thre­sia, on Sun­day. Pope Francis will de­clare Mariam Thre­sia, who founded the Con­gre­ga­tion of the Holy Fam­ily (CHF), a saint at 1.30pm IST in a cer­e­mony at St Peter’s Square, Vat­i­can. Her pic­ture has al­ready been dis­played at the Square as part of the canon­i­sa­tion pro­ce­dure.

Mariam Thre­sia was born at Puthenchir­a in Ker­ala’s Thris­sur district. The so­cial re­former, known for her mys­ti­cism, took up the cause of women’s ed­u­ca­tion in the late 19th cen­tury while tend­ing to the needy and the sick.

The faith­ful be­lieve that Mother Thre­sia’s in­ter­ces­sion can lead to mir­a­cles and they pray at her tomb at the pil­grim cen­tre here.
