Pope to declare Kerala nun a saint today
Kochi: The Catholic Church in Kerala is all set to celebrate the canonisation of its fourth saint, Mother Mariam Thresia, on Sunday. Pope Francis will declare Mariam Thresia, who founded the Congregation of the Holy Family (CHF), a saint at 1.30pm IST in a ceremony at St Peter’s Square, Vatican. Her picture has already been displayed at the Square as part of the canonisation procedure.
Mariam Thresia was born at Puthenchira in Kerala’s Thrissur district. The social reformer, known for her mysticism, took up the cause of women’s education in the late 19th century while tending to the needy and the sick.
The faithful believe that Mother Thresia’s intercession can lead to miracles and they pray at her tomb at the pilgrim centre here.
