Pithoragarh: Airlines will henceforth have to inform passengers by SMS about any flight being delayed beyond half an hour or a last-minute gate change at a departure terminal, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Friday.

“Airlines must send SMSes every 30 minutes to keep the passengers updated about any flight delay, cancellation (and) boarding-gate change,” states a directive issued to all carriers by DGCA chief Arun Kumar.

Flight delays in airports like Delhi, Amritsar and Lucknow are common in winter. Once a flight originating from any of these airports is held up, the ripple effect is felt across all sectors that the aircraft is scheduled to travel that day.

“All necessary assistance must be provided to the passengers for their connecting flights. In case of delay, airlines should make appropriate arrangement(s) to provide water, refreshments and meals,” states the directive.
