Mt Titlis: Mountain of Angels
Guarding the little alpine town of Engelberg, Mt Titlis has a mélange of icy experiences on offer for the winter enthusiast.
With a 12th-century Benedictine monastery at its heart, and an icy landscape hemmed in by divine slopes, the alpine village of Engelberg (that literally translates to ‘mountain of an angel’) is tucked snugly into central Switzerland. A short train ride from the city of Lucerne, the Swiss town is best known as a base to explore the towering Mount Titlis.
A breathtaking gondola ride through pines, alps, and glacier crevasses takes you to the glacial wonderland of
Mount Titlis, which stands at a height of 3,020 metres, stays peppered with snow all around the year, and has a lot more than just otherworldly panoramic views to offer. Take a ride in the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car; face your fear by walking on Europe’s highest suspension bridge,
Titlis Cliff Walk; witness icy magic in the Titlis Glacier Cave where the ice is up to 5,000 years old and the temperature below zero; go skiing or snowboarding; or have the complete snow experience at the Glacier Park.
The region is conducive to fun in all seasons, with tourists pouring in through the year. Come summer, you can take up a mountaineering challenge and climb up to the summit of Graustock, or stop by the pristine lake of Trübsee where you can follow a trail of alpine flowers along its shore, or glide down from Gershnialp to Engelberg on a trotti-bike. Arrive in wintertime, and you can go ice-skating through an igloo or go on a toboggan run that spans a distance of 3,500 metres over a 250-metre altitude descent.
