Travel + Leisure - India & South Asia
Letter from the Editor
AS WE GEAR UP FOR what will hopefully be a travel-filled season, we’ve compiled some endearing, exciting, and amusing family-travel narratives. Explore Madurai’s most famous temples and markets with a motley bunch of people who have starkly contrasting preferences (p. 47); discover the undiscovered gem of Thandikudi in Tamil Nadu on a family reunion (p. 52); travel all the way to Alaska for lessons in loss and rebuilding (p. 62);
accompany two siblings on a rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon (p. 76); and go skiing on the powder-snow pistes of Megève (p. 58).
Our other travelogues take you on a scenic road trip to Coorg to experience birdsong, soulful food, and idyllic days in dreamy Airbnb villas (p. 54), and to a luxury farm stay in Mihir Garh, Rajasthan (p. 16). Although international commercial flights are mostly on hold (barring to the countries in air bubbles), who can ever get over NYC? Discover it in a new light with our glamorous picture series in Through the Lens (p. 32). And if you simply need to detox, our list of the best yoga retreats across the country provide the key to holistic wellness (p. 68).
As the business of travel and tourism slowly but steadily finds its way back after a catastrophic year, we list the Top 20 Business Hotels that are bound to catch your eye this year (p. 7). For this month’s cover shoot, we take Bollywood actor Diana Penty—an avid traveller herself— to The Oberoi, Mumbai, which was recognised as the No. 1 City Hotel in Asia by Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2020. The actor reminisces about her growing up years in the City of Dreams (p. 40).
As part of our digital outreach, our website (travelandleisureindia.in) zooms into the travel trend of the season: caravanning. From uber luxe caravans to the cutest camper-van trip with a pup, this month is all about seeing incredible India in your caravan.
Bon voyage!
