LITTLE DID WE KNOW that within days of our wrapping up this issue’s cover shoot with the stunning Janhvi Kapoor at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, India would be in the grip of a second COVID-19 wave. As we struggled to come to terms with the heavy toll of the pandemic, we had a tough decision to make: whether to carry on with this issue as planned or not. We know that many of our readers cannot— and should not—travel right now. But we also know that people need something to look forward to, perhaps now more than ever before. Multiple studies have shown that the planning and anticipation of a trip can boost a person’s happiness. As travel connoisseurs, we can attest to that power. And so, we decided that even though this may not be the ideal time to go to the beautiful Maldives, it is the ideal time to let your mind meander on its white-sand beaches and swim in its turquoise lagoons. Let our cover feature be your window to the gorgeous island nation (p. 32), and our list of leading resorts be your map for plotting the dreamy vacation that awaits you in the future (p. 10).

We have also compiled some lesserexplored Indian destinations to include in your post-lockdown travel goals (p. 5). One prime example is a road trip across Kashmir’s sensitive regions, where nature reigns supreme (p. 46). Sikkim was a common holiday destination for me, a Bengali growing up in Kolkata in the 1980s-90s. Now, the country’s first organic state draws travellers from various nooks and corners with its sustainable experiences (p. 50).

FROM MY TRAVELS While now is the time to stay home and stay safe, there is absolutely no doubt that Maldives is one of the most stunning destinations in the world I have ever visited. A place I will definitely head back to when it is safe for us to travel again.
