MTDC to revive Sewri Fort in Mumbai
In a bid to promote heritage tourism, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation ( MTDC) has planned to revive the Sewri Fort in Mumbai as a pilot project. The success of the project could be replicated for other forts that are not recognised by the Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI) or the state directorate. The proposal has been mooted by MTDC
` at a cost of 11 crore for Sewri Fort, which is popular for spotting migratory flamingoes, as per a release. Tourists can take their own time, sip a cup of coffee and track migratory birds within the comforts of an open-deck restaurant, Managing MTDC said. Jagdish Patil,
Director,
The MTDC initiative is a significant development because, of the total 350 forts, only about 19 are recognised by the ASI, while another 50 are recognised by the state directorates.
