We love our vis­its to beauty sa­lons and spas! It has prob­a­bly given us our best hair­dos, glow­ing skin and a few hours bliss­ful­ness.

To­day, it is a space to blank out from ev­ery­day hum­drum, stress and re­vi­talise… and let’s ad­mit it, we all de­sire to be pam­pered. Cash­ing in on this, the beauty ser­vices in­dus­try in In­dia has been bur­geon­ing like never be­fore. In this is­sue, our cover story “Beauty Ser­vices Get An Ex­pe­ri­en­tial Makeover”, takes a look at the trans­for­ma­tion of this cat­e­gory, where along with bet­ter beauty prod­ucts and ser­vices, the brands are cre­at­ing the right am­bi­ence and ex­pe­ri­ence for the cus­tomers. Mov­ing away from just a clin­i­cal look, the beauty sa­lons and spas are get­ting warm, com­fort­able and in tune with the needs of the cus­tomers walk­ing in. VM&RD throws light on some of the in­ter­est­ing trends, for­mats and de­sign ele­ments.

In our In­dus­try Fo­cus, we high­light the ma­jor makeover hap­pen­ing with Re­tail Light­ing, which is get­ting all smart, fully tech-en­abled and cen­trally op­er­a­tional. In­ter­est­ingly, we also ob­served that while ap­pli­ca­tion de­sign was al­ways avail­able, prod­uct de­sign has started hap­pen­ing of late in the coun­try. Ven­dors are warm­ing up to a fully ‘Make in In­dia’ con­cept.

This apart, our In­dian De­sign sec­tion in­ter­est­ingly looks at two ex­pe­ri­ence cen­tres - Crest – The Na­ture Store takes the brand’s long legacy of ply­wood dis­trib­u­tor­ship to the next level of ex­pe­ri­en­tial re­tail and DBEL Stu­dio emerges as a con­ver­sa­tion space around artis­tic light­ing.

We also have the leg­endary Her­shey’s new up­graded Choco­late World at NYC in the in­ter­na­tional sec­tion.

Talk­ing busi­ness, we have had the plea­sure of in­ter­view­ing Rakesh Biyani, Joint Man­ag­ing Di­rec­tor, Fu­ture Re­tail on the pro­jected growth plan of the re­tail gi­ant, while Tanvi Ma­lik, Co-founder, FabAl­ley talks to VM&RD on their ex­pan­sion and omni-chan­nel strate­gies.
