RE­TAIL YA­TRA of VM&RD stops over at cities across the length and breadth of our vast coun­try and brings to you suc­cess­ful lead­ers in the in­de­pen­dent re­tail sec­tor deal­ing in or­gan­ised re­tail in their ter­ri­to­ries -- bench­marks to beat!

The jour­ney this time takes us to Su­rat. Su­rat has emerged as the 10th best city, with high mar­ket po­ten­tial and in­creas­ing re­tail mall sup­ply. Its fast grow­ing in­dus­trial sec­tor is giv­ing a boost to re­tail de­vel­op­ment. Thanks to in­creased im­mi­gra­tion and im­prov­ing in­fras­truc­ture, tier-II and tier-III cities, led by Ahmedabad, Chandi­garh and Su­rat, are set to wit­ness a high level of re­tail bo­nanza in the near fu­ture.

The tex­tile in­dus­try in Su­rat is mainly en­gaged in yarn pro­duc­tion, weav­ing, pro­cess­ing as well as em­broi­dery. Su­rat is well known for its syn­thetic prod­ucts mar­ket. It is mainly en­gaged in the pro­duc­tion and trad­ing of syn­thetic tex­tile prod­ucts.

Nearly 30 mil­lion me­tres of raw fab­ric and 25 mil­lion me­tres of pro­cessed fab­ric are pro­duced in Su­rat daily. The city has sev­eral tex­tile mar­kets that ex­ist since times im­memo­rial. Zampa Bazaar, Bom­bay Mar­ket, JJ Tex­tile Mar­ket and Jash Mar­ket are some of them. The fa­mous brands of Gar­den and Vi­mal tex­tiles emerged from Su­rat. From a busy high-street to large for­mat stores, Su­rat is brim­ming with re­tail busi­ness. It is the tex­tile hub and the ap­parel and fab­ric mar­ket is huge.
