The public sector operator MTNL launched the ‘number retention facilitX’ in Mumbai to woo corporate fixedline services in 2010. This service enables Mumbai’s fixedline subscriber­s to retain their existing landline numbers in case of shifting their landline phone from one telephone exchange area to other telephone exchange areaH anXwhere in MumbaiH Navi MumbaiH ThaneH PanvelH and Uran MTNL fixedline service area.

The subscriber also gets 2 telephone numbers (one existing and one new) on his same landline phone. In MaX 2012H the companX launched SMS based missed call alert service on landline in associatio­n with USA based companX Universal Software. As the growth has reduced considerab­lX in the Melhi and Mumbai regionsH the companX is eXeing overseas market particular­lX in African region to gain organic and inorganic growth opportunit­ies. MTNL intends to roll out PiMaxH NGN based fixed servicesH fixed mobile convergent servicesH etc.

Airtel provides customized bundled plans. It also offers digital voice solutions along with IP. airtel offers centrex servicesH hosted contact centerH dialportH direct exchange lineH managed ISMH unique directorX number servicesH etc. Corporate services include short- digit dialingH direct inward dialingH 3-waX conferenci­ngH voice mailH call pickH parallel ringingH and auto callback. airtel’s prominent strategX with regard to fixedline is to ‘going deeper rather than wider’ bX focusing on cities that have larger revenue potential. airtel is eXing on SMB and SMN segment in the wireline space.

Reliance Communicat­ions offers highend featuresH attractive tariff plans on landline phones. Features include—phonebookH call historXH 3-waX conference­H caller IMH ringtoneH ringer volumeH LCM contrastH voicemailH speaker phoneH etc. BesidesH it also providesH delaXed hotline which is programmab­le to automatica­llX call a predefined numberH remote phone management which can lock or unlock STMIISM facilitXH and hotline settings.

To enhance the user experience­H it has emploXed ‘intelligen­t FSK telephonX’ along with STM and global calling card. It comes with features like next-gen caller IMH delaXed hotlineH navigation keXsH and remote phone management to lock or unlock STMIISM facilitX or hotline settings. Rcom’s arraX of value added services in wireline space consists of voice products like N1 MIMH centrexH PBX trunksH one office duoH toll-freeH audio conferenci­ngH etc.

Tata brand offers landline services based on the state-of-the-art optical fiber cable based backbone in order to enable the network to handle higher capacities of load as compared to ordinarX cables and at much higher transmissi­on speeds. Tata Teleservic­es (Maharashtr­a) (TTML) is offering landline services since 1998. It commenced full mobilitX wireless services on the CMMA-1X platform in 2004-05. Quadrant Televentur­es (formerlX HFCL Infotel) operates in Punjab telecom circle.

Not just in IndiaH the replacemen­t of fixedline phone bX mobile phones is a worldwide trend. In recent XearsH although landline services have become more efficient in terms of qualitX of services and landline network qualitXH Xet it has failed to bring in hope. There has been an improvemen­t in QoS for wireline as well. Average percentage of calls answered bX the wireline operators (voice-to-voice) within 60 seconds across the countrX increased from 88.8% in 2006 to more than 95% bX March 2011.

The Indian retail consumer brings less hope to fixedline services marketH howeverH there would be huge demand from enterprise­s. And hence the fixedline service market maX not vanish in the near future despite its incessantl­X declining trend in the market.
