As telcos cope with managing complexities at business processes, open source provides a new lifeline
In the recent past, the telecommunication industry has noiselessly adopted open source software for internal operational systems and customer-facing service delivery platforms across the world. It is needless to mention the efficacy of open source technology; it has become pervasive in the technological world both in terms of awareness and adoption for the cost benefits it brings with it, for enabling organization to stay ahead of technology curve, reduced dependence on a particular vendor to make systems a lot more flexible and adaptable to changes in the market, and to create ‘sand-box’ environment to try new technology options without risk of loss.
This vastly accelerates successful adoption of right technology in quick time. It has matured both in terms of technology advancements and adoption though the industry took time to adopt and adapt to it.
We are witnessing a drastic transformation in the telecommunication industry with a gamut of voice and data services to satiate the needs of hyper connectivity in the evolving ecosystem of applications and newer communication technologies.
In this transition mode, telcos are under pressure to ensure reduced time- to-market, operational economies of scale, capital cost reduction, and support for mobility.
Telcos ought to offer excellent quality of service and experience in this environment, which comprises multiple networks such as 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, FTTH, fixed broadband etc, multiple devices, and multiple connections. All these developments have led to the complexities and chaos to manage and sustain business processes, while efficient and agile software can bring in some relief and ease of managing the telecom business processes.
