Getting Super Specialists to Work

When the complexity or the scale of enterprise IT and networks crosses a threshold, calling in experts to take over makes good management sense

Over the years, enterprise networks and IT assets have grown so large that at times the internal IT teams are unable to manage all of it in a seamless manner. Moreover, with the technologies and paradigms changing at frequent pace, it is difficult for IT departments to acquire and stay abreast with the right skillsets.

Managed services today spans a wide range of service segments – from hosting, co-location, IT security, threat detection and management, to content delivery or just managed print services. Managed services help businesses manage their daily operations and network infrastructure efficiently, thus allowing organizations to focus on their core business activities.

As the popular adage goes, for every work there is a specialist who can make the job look easier. Managed services providers (MSPs) do just that and allow businesses to collaborate seamlessly with their clients and internal teams.

By leveraging the Internet, MPLS, VSAT and cloud solutions, MSPs help enterprises connect efficiently throughout the locations and centers and help them become more productive. These services play a vital role in addressing customer grievances and enable workforce to work remotely without compromising on quality.

Typically, managed hosting includes technical services such as hardware and software set-up and design, repairs and replacements, technical support, patching, updating and supervision. Along with that it also includes additional support like vulnerability scans, intrusion detections, attack mitigations, backups, load balancing, and more. The additional services may involve a higher cost depending upon the managed service package offered by the vendor.

Talking of managed hosting, where there is much focus and interest today, from both the demand and supply sides of the market. In very simple terms, managed hosting may be described as a step above dedicated hosting, in the value chain (dedicated hosting can be both managed and unmanaged). Also, unlike shared hosting that involves placing many websites on one server, dedicated hosting is the option where enterprises are assigned a dedicated server.

Technology Trends

In today’s competitive environment, enterprises look for solutions that can help them run business without any pause. This include entire ambit of solutions in the range of back-up connectivity, voice, data, security and managed hosting. Driven by the growing number of smart phones and other mobile devices, connectivity platforms and mobile broad-
