For a spa treatment amid nature, the first place that springs to mind is Spa at Maya Ubud. Walking through the verdant landscape of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa's grounds towards the rugged river valley is a gentle way to ease your mind into nature. Taking the private lift down a level takes you to a separate world; other than the adjacent River Café and swimming pool, you are almost in a world that time has forgotten. Wooden walkways lead along the banks of the gently meandering Petanu River to the open-air reception and then on towards the spa's individual treatment pavilions nestled into the contours of the undulating land and looking out onto the wildly wooded hills across from the river. Each room is situated in its own dark wood hut and is semi-open to nature. After changing, your therapist starts with the foot-washing ritual, before settling you onto the treatment bed and setting the ceiling fan for your comfort. Then, as she starts to knead away your weariness and the fragrance of your massage oil adds to the glorious ambience, your mind can let go, wandering free with the sound of the birds and the gentle breeze. Your flower bath is a ritual itself, covered in bright yellow fragrant blooms you can soak for a while gazing out into nature in all its glory. All the massage oils and treatments are based on Indonesia's ancient beauty rituals, honouring the country's long traditions, which, along with the skilled therapists, make this spa journey one that lingers in the memory.
