Hermès Arceau Robe Du Soir
Based on the “Robe du Soir” silk scarf design by Florence Manlik, Hermès’ Arceau Robe Du Soir watch features tiny juxtaposed leather squares that is set against an electric blue backdrop and matching calfskin strap. Of course, this process is anything but easy, or for that matter, common, since mosaic artists usually use glass or stone instead of leather. It took about a year and a half of research and development to make this watch happen. To start, no less than 3,500 tesserae are finely cut out from carefully selected full-grain. From this, 2,200 of leather fragments are fit into the dial to make up the equestrian motif. Besides the dial, the watch itself takes design cues from the Arceau developed by Henri d’Origny in 1978 and comes equipped with stirrup-inspired asymmetrical lugs. The Arceau Robe Du Soir, however, marks the first time that an Arceau is introduced in rose gold.
