it wasn’t exactly surprising, then, that the professional association between the Australian actor and the swiss watch brand grew into something a lot more cordial. eventually, late last year, Jean-claude biver, ceo of tAG heuer and president of the lVmh Group watch division, appointed hemsworth as an official ambassador of the brand.
while hemsworth’s performance in “rush” certainly played a part—and a big part, at that— in his appointment as brand ambassador, there were plenty of other factors that made him the perfect candidate. his international renown, for one—being the big-screen incarnation of marvel comics’ god of thunder is certainly hard to beat. Then there’s his acting chops which, coupled with his track record of resolute professionalism, puts him squarely in the class of global stars who “don’t crack under pressure.”
so, as of november last year, tAG heuer’s international advertising campaign features the Australian actor showcasing his muscular physique, his intense stare and the tAG heuer carrera - heuer 01. with a new case, new construction and a new caliber, this watch embodies the new dynamic followed by the brand’s 2015 models.
The case, in particular, showcases a radical departure from tAG heuer’s traditional singlepiece design. instead, the case features a modular construction with 12 different components. obviously, this would allow for a vast number of possible combinations of material and color, with even more customization options probably down the road. beyond the modular design, the carrera - heuer 01’s case is also larger (at 45mm, compared to 41mm for older carrera models) and houses a modern-looking skeletonized dial.
yet, despite all its new trappings, this watch still retains all the hallmarks of the carrera line. it is, essentially, a modern and more technical interpretation of tAG heuer’s storied racinginspired chronograph. And it’s hard to think of a better representative for the watch and the brand’s new direction in 2016 than the one and only chris hemsworth.
