Back at this year’s Baselworld, omega unveiled a complete facelift of the famous seamaster diver 300m. loved for its design and technology, the original timepiece signaled omega’s triumphant return to the world of diving watches also ignited the brand’s long-standing partnership with the one and only agent 007, James Bond. This time, beyond fourteen unique models, including six in stainless steel and eight in a mix of steel and gold, a unique entry into the family caught everybody’s attention: The seamaster diver 300m titanium tantalum limited edition.
A Rebooted Classic
When the seamaster diver 300m was first released 25 years ago, omega employed a very unique metal known as tantalum in its construction. The color was a perfect match for the revolutionary new watch design, which also included the professional characteristics one would expect from a diver’s watch, such as a helium escape valve—a decompression system which allows helium to escape from inside the watch when the watch is worn for deep dives— and extendable divers’ clasp.
This year, omega pays tribute to that 1993 release by introducing a special model with tantalum that is limited to only 2,500 pieces. once again, using this metal gives the watch a unique touch and offers a collectible addition to the new diver 300m selection. size-wise, at
42mm, this limited edition model follows the same facelift principles as the rest of the new seamaster diver 300m collection. for instance, the conical helium escape valve, wave-edged caseback and the integrated bracelet.
however, in this version, tantalum has been used for the base of the bezel, as well as in the middle links of the bracelet. The metal’s bluegray tone offers a subtle contrast to the grade 2 titanium, which omega has used for the brushed case and bracelet. This limited edition model also includes touches of 18K sedna gold, which can be seen on the crown, bezel ring, helium escape valve, bracelet links and hands
Beauty Comes From Within
turning the seamaster diver 300m titanium tantalum limited edition over reveals a transparent caseback, featuring an image of the omega seahorse—an iconic symbol long associated with the seamaster line. Through the sapphire-crystal, we can also see the master chronometer movement 8806, certified by the swiss federal institute of metrology (metas).
mind you, to earn the master chronometer name, a watch and its movement must endure eight stringent tests approved by metas. The watch is tested for, among others, resistance to external environmental factors like magnetism, shock, temperature and water. performed over the course of 10 days, these replicate real-life wearing conditions and beyond. most notably, the master chronometer certified seamaster diver 300m demonstrates resistance to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss.
after that, the movement is checked and the robustness and stability of the timepieces is confirmed. put simply, if it doesn’t reach the pass marks required, it will never reach the wrist of the customer. This series of tests is the best guarantee from the brand, meaning that at the end of the day, customers will receive only the very highest level of precision, performance as well as ruggedness.
