What’s the inspiration behind your multidisciplinary design firm involving landscape, architecture, research and installations?

I studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. I was encouraged to embrace all three disciplines on equal footing and develop my own design approach which integrates them all and at different scales, from installation to city planning. Research is an integral part of every design project I undertake.

What special significance does rebuilding the library in your hometown of Fez have?

I am deeply honoured to be asked to restore a building created by a woman in my hometown 12 centuries ago. I think Fatima El Fihrya is a wonderful role model for girls around the world, she had a vision for her city, and an ambition which still shines and positively impact people’s lives until today. How do you juggle your time at the firm and as a university professor in Toronto?

It’s hard, given that I have two offices and a four-year-old son. But my deep passion for teaching, research and building projects that empower communities keeps me going.

Toronto is a melting pot of nationalities and culinary cultures. What are some of the best local restaurants?

The food culture is incredible and constantly evolving. I particularly like the restaurant Korean Village for its authentic Korean food and warm welcome, and Depanneur, which has a fantastic concept: it invites chefs and also Syrian refugees to cook set dinners shared by guests who sign up in advance. Cooking lessons are also offered.

Where are the best places to hang out or dine at in Morocco?

I love the restaurant Noor in Fez by chef Najat Kaanach, and the delicious vegetarian organic food at Marrakech Organics in Marrakesh.

What are you favourite dishes or drinks in Morocco?

I love the special smoothie one can find in any café in Morocco - avocado with milk, dates and pistachios. Tourists usually don’t know about this hidden secret. I also recommend heading to the spice market in the Medina of Fez (Attarine), especially for their saffron.
