The Bar Setter

-

CLAIM TO FAME

In 2008, Jakarta after dark offered limited options for tired office workers who wished to have good dinners and stiff drinks. Then, Loewy opened in the heart of Jakarta’s central business district. A retro 1940s-inspired French bistro and bar, it offers an accessible menu, cosy leather seating for tête-à-tête, an alfresco area, and a 15-metre-long bar that is packed pretty much every evening since its opening. There was nothing like it. Since then, Loewy’s craft cocktails, French bistro fare and high level of service has successfully captured the hearts of Jakarta’s late-night revellers. It also paved the way for the founding of The Union Group, now one of Jakarta’s leading

F&B groups. Fast forward to 2020, Loewy is on course to become a classic and continues to set the bar for good times.

BLAZING THE TRAIL

As an elevated casual bistro, classic French brasserie dishes are what defined Loewy’s DNA - Steak Frites, Escargot, Cheese Fondue and Croque Monsieur are among the favourites. However, as it is located in the middle of the business district in Jakarta, the Asian dishes were equally popular, including its rendition of

Ayam Betutu. Loewy was the birthplace of creative cocktails such as Cotton Candy Cosmopolitan, Kretek Whisky Sour and Sage & Cucumber Sling. Loewy was also the first bar in Indonesia to enter Asia’s 50 Best Bars list in 2016, ranked at 32, a testament to its significant contribution to Indonesia’s craft cocktail culture.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Loewy has become an institution after 12 years in business. The focus of The Union Group for Loewy is to maintain the quality of the food, service and atmosphere. At the moment, it is undergoing a renovation and will reopen in May. Expect a revamped menu, a new chef and a refreshed interior.

THE OM FACTOR

Deriving its inspiration from America’s legendary industrial designer, Raymond Loewy, the bistro and bar’s philosophy is

‘Never leave well enough alone’ – a pledge to strive for consistency and at the same time, continuous improvement.
