» WHERE TO EAT

Yogyakarta’s dining scene is growing. One of my favourites is Gadjah Wong Restaurant, a long established riverside restaurant that offers delicious Indonesian and European classic dishes.

For coffee with a view, head to Warung

Kopi Klotok. Its Banana Fritter is not to be missed and it is made even better with the view of Mount Merapi and the surrounding rice field. To enjoy fine French and Mediterranean fare with a homely ambience, head to Mediterranea Restaurant by Kamil in Tirtodipuran neighbourhood.

» WHERE TO DRINK

Several watering holes worth a visit are Liquid Vintage Jogja on Magelang Street and Cubic Kitchen & Bar. The first offers a large variety of wine that will delight the oenophiles. The latter is located near Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta and is renowned for its daily live DJ performances as well as its artisanal cocktails and excellent food.

» WHERE TO STAY

The culture vultures will find D’omah Boutique Villa Resort delightful. Located in the rural area of Bantul, it is a good spot to explore the local culture and village life. Golfers will enjoy a stay at The Cangkringan Villa & Spa. The villa is located next to the Merapi Golf Club with its challenging hilly landscape and mountain views. Last but not least, Sumberwatu Heritage Resort makes for an excellent base to explore Yogyakarta’s stunning ancient temples such as the Prambanan and the Ratu Boko.

» WHAT TO DO

A trip to Yogyakarta is not complete without a visit to the Keraton Yogyakarta complex. Learn about the history of the royal family through a visit to the Sultan’s Palace, Taman Sari Water Castle, and the Royal Carriage Museum. Borobudur and Prambanan Temple are two of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that one must see. From Prambanan, make your way to the nearby Sewu Temple with a bicycle. Hire a private jeep for a lava tour where you can explore Mount Merapi for a thrilling off-road adventure.
