Margarita

-

Nothing goes down better on a lazy sun-drenched summer day, or a hot sultry holiday night, than a refreshingly tangy margarita. Served either shaken with ice, blended to create a frozen margarita, or even served straight, this tequila-based cocktail is a favourite holiday concoction and one synonymous with relaxed vibes and carefree days.

The origins of the Margarita are as hazy as the drink itself. One of the earliest suggestions was that in 1938 Carlos “Danny” Herrera created the drink at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, Mexico, for a frequent customer and former Ziegfeld dancer, Marjorie King, who was said to be allergic to most spirits but luckily not to tequila.

Served in the Margarita coupe, the classic cocktail glass, or even a lowball or highball, it is usually rimmed with salt or sugar and garnished with lime. The margarita uses tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and sometimes demi-sec. A drink that can be prepared in bulk, it is simple to recreate at home. Simply rub the rim of the glass with a lime slice to help the salt or sugar stick, shake the other ingredients with ice, then carefully pour into the glass. Garnish and serve over ice.
